Motion for ‘Deregulation of the Barbing micro-sub sector’ In other states of the country- asides Lagos- State Chapters of Barbers Association have so regulated the cost of barbing and other related services to the point where there is no room for price competition or innovation of any sort. If a young lad plans to set up a Barbing salon, that is after he has acquired the necessary equipment and products to push-start his Salon, he is expected to pay a particular fee to the respective State Chapter his salon is situated, then he is handed a set of instruction- Price list- which he must follow to the letter… There are fixed rates for all services. He follows not at his own peril- a penalty of 5K awaits him per offence. And of course, he must attend Sunday meetings to drink ‘sepe’, donate to the child dedication of their Chairman or whatever the event donation is mandated for and in some instances, to discuss party programs (Beer Parlour Politics). What this means is that the Barber cannot study the market and rework his pricing tactic to serve a particular segment/cluster… He has been conditioned… And there is absolutely nothing he can do about it.
