Motivation: The Easy Method The easiest way I’ve found to motivate myself is to just do the simplest physical action I need to get something started. If it’s writing, that means sitting down at my computer and opening up my word processor. If it’s brainstorming a novel, I write down a question on a piece of paper. If it’s working out, it means putting on my gym shorts. I only think about that simple task and not everything that comes after. Do the easiest thing possible. And then the next easiest thing. Keep going until you’re done. Theory: We de-motivate ourselves when we think about all the other things that have to be done. This short-circuits the reward center of our brain. The anticipated feeling of accomplishment is overwhelmed by the dread of all things we don’t want to do.
