Motorists who miss exit road to Ipoh pay an expensive price IT takes 51 minutes and costs about RM18 of petrol for northbound motorists when they miss the Ipoh exit on the North-South Expressway and make a U-turn at Kuala Kangsar to return to Ipoh. The entire route is 68km-long and motorists will have to enter the Kuala Kangsar toll plaza and make a U-turn to re-enter the expressway. A check by The Star showed that the toll costs RM3.50 from Kuala Kangsar to Ipoh, amounting to RM21.50 in total. Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir had urged PLUS Malaysia Bhd to construct a passageway after the Ipoh Selatan toll for those who missed the exit road. “I urge PLUS to give serious thoughts to the proposal. “Hopefully, an alternative passageway between Ipoh and Kuala Kangsar can be made to allow motorists to make the U-turn,” he said. Ipoh folk had mixed reactions over the proposal although many agreed that missing the Ipoh exit could be a costly mistake. Teacher Simon Yeap, 56, said motorists who were travelling to Ipoh using the expressway for the first time would be among those prone to making the mistake. “They could be tourists from nearby states who want to explore Ipoh. For example, some of my friends were travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Penang and wanted to stop by in Ipoh for a meal. “However, they missed the Ipoh exit road and decided to continue their journey as it would take a long time for them to travel back to Ipoh,” he said. Yeap said having a passageway was a good idea as it would make it convenient for motorists and encourage many people to visit Ipoh,” he added. Nursing student K. Reetha, 24, from Batu Gajah, was also supportive of the state government’s suggestion, but felt that having more signs before the last entrance road to Ipoh could be helpful. “I have not missed the exit before but that is because when I drive, I keep my eyes peeled for the exit road. “When motorists drive fast or are busy chatting with other passengers, they may miss the road,” she said. A check by The Star also showed that there were four large signs about 2km before the Ipoh exit road. Telekom technician Mohd Nor Affendi Mohd Nor Din, 43, disagreed with the proposal as he felt it would be difficult to create a passageway after the Ipoh turning. “The road is mostly uphill after this turning. “Therefore, it will be difficult to construct a passageway that is safe for motorists to make a U-turn.” Mohd Nor Affendi said a better solution would be to create a special lane about 4km or so before the exit road so that motorists do not miss it.
