Motorsport Ireland Round Up Young Rally Driver of the Year Daniel McKenna scored his fourth win in succession in the Rally Two category of Rally Yorkshire at the weekend to increase his lead in his section of the MSA British Rally Championship still further. The Monaghan driver was twelve seconds ahead of Jon Armstrong after a close battle throughout the two days, with his main title rival, Norwegian Steve Rokland, in third place. McKenna and co-driver Arthur Kierans also lead the Fiesta Sport Trophy as they head into the final round, the Sunseeker Rally in late October. Third place in the Omagh Bushwhacker Rally was enough to clinch the Valvoline National Forestry Rally title for Corkman Mike O’Brien, with his co-driver Greg Shinnors finishing as runner up in the series behind James O’Brien. Dunlop Motorsport Ireland Young Racing Driver of the Year Kevin O’Hara finished a troubled season on a high note by scoring a clear win in the Martin Donnelly Memorial race at Kirkistown, the biggest Formula Ford 1600 race in the country. The Kildareman won his qualifying heat and opened out a ten second lead in the Final over runner up Jonny McMullan, also setting the fastest lap of the race. Dubliner Aron Smith had his best results of the year at Silverstone, finishing second and third in two of the three British Touring Car Championship rounds. In the supporting races, 16 year old Navan driver Keith Donegan scored two victories in the Ginetta Junior Championship rounds, climbing to second place in the points table. Irish team Murphy Prototypes scored their first win in the final round of the European Le Mans Series at Paul Ricard circuit in France in a thrilling finish, which saw them just six seconds ahead of their rivals after three hours of racing despite their Oreca car suffering from brake problems for much of the race.
