Move to merge four Trinamul tea unions [Avijit Sinha, tt] Siliguri, Nov. 18: The Trinamul Congress leadership has invited leaders of four unions of tea garden workers allegiant to the party for a meeting in Calcutta on November 22 to discuss the possibility of a merger. Trinamul has taken the initiative as it dawned on the party thats its trade union INTTUC is yet to make inroads into the tea belt of north Bengal. The four unions are the Trinamul Tea Plantation Workers Union, Dooars Terai Plantation Workers Union, Darjeeling District Tea Employees and Workers Union, and the another which operates as INTTUC. It is a fact that presence of at least four tea trade unions backed by Trinamul has led to division within us. We couldnt augment Trinamuls support in the tea belt as the four unions worked separately. That is why Left trade unions like the Citu are calling the shots in the tea industry even today. When it comes to issues like revision of wages and fixing of minimum pay for the tea industry, Trinamul doesnt have a say, said Alok Chakraborty, the working president of the Trinamul Tea Plantation Workers Union. He said the leadership of Trinamul and the INTTUC would hold a meeting with the representatives of the four unions in Calcutta on November 22 to float a single body for tea plantation labourers. We are confident if all the four unions join hands and leaders work under a single umbrella, we will have a considerable support base. That is why a meeting of all the four unions has been called in Calcutta on November 22 to discuss the proposal for floating a single union in the tea industry, said Chakraborty.
