Move to rope in Italian firm for Light Metro project in Kerala : Even as the Cabinet is yet to give the nod for the Detailed Project Report prepared by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) for Light Metro proposed for Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode, hectic parleys are on to replace DMRC with a private Italian consulting company as the General Design Consultant for the project. The move has the blessings at the highest level as representatives of the Rome-based FG Technopolo Holding S.r.l., an international engineering and architecture consulting firm, has already held a meeting at the Chief Minister’s office and discussions with the officials of Kerala Monorail Corporation Ltd (KMCL). Antonio Gnisci, general manager of the firm, has given the Expression of Interest in this regard, sources associated with the project told The Hindu . The proposal put forward involves an upgrade of the implementation strategy moving from “turn-key basis” mooted by DMRC for 35.12 km in two cities. The firm has claimed expertise to prepare the final design for civil works and transportation engineering, tender documents and quality control in construction phase. Though the firm has claimed that it is ‘basically to support and integrate” the activities of the DMRC and to bring in international experience, a transport planner said once it is approved the DMRC would have no role in the project conceived by Principal Adviser E. Sreedharan. The DMRC, which was the general consultant for the scrapped monorail in view of the prohibitive cost, had mooted turn-key as multiple agencies are involved for civil works, rolling stock and signalling. The DMRC will be responsible for design, floating tenders, and project management consultancy. The spv will release funds for certified bills submitted by the DMRC as being done in Kochi Metro.
