Movement Monday: Ever wonder why we roll around on the floor? Rolling is one of the most basic core exercises you can do and one of the first things you learned how to do as a baby. Most people go crazy training their outer core muscles in hopes of a six pack, but neglect the importance of the inner core. Think of the inner core as a “cylinder” from your diaphragm to your pelvic floor that creates a solid foundation for your limbs to move on and protects your spine. The main duty of our inner core is to be able to fire and brace quickly to provide stability to protect our bodies. If it loses the ability to do so, overall performance will plummet and risk of injury will greatly increase. Imagine how unstable it would be firing a canon off of a canoe versus a large, solid vessel. This is your inner core being inefficient versus efficient. Enter rolling: An awesome way enhance core function and teaching the inner core to fire efficiently and coordinate movement through the upper and lower body.
