Movie Review - PADDINGTON Release Date: 11/12/14 Rating: G Director: Paul King Stars: Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Julie Walters, Nicole Kidman, Ben Whishaw & Peter Capaldi Run Time: 95 min’s Score (out of 10): 9 Well here’s a rarity for family cinema-goers … a charming, funny & sweet-but-not-sappy ‘G’ rated flick that’ll please audiences 5 to 105. Wow, it’s been a while since I’ve been so totally entranced by a kids’ flick. And considering I was never particularly into the Paddington books as a child; I went into this film simply on the back of a trailer starring a cutesy bear (voice of Whishaw - 007’s new Q), the Earl of Grantham (Bonneville) & Ron Weasley’s (Walters) mum. What I discovered though was P is the perfect blend of live action & CGI. And with a rare G-rating & the perfect U10 running time of just over 90 min’s, there’s very little to find fault with. The story follows the marmalade-obsessed bear in question, as he travels from Peru to London in hope of finding a new home; & a family. And so when a chance encounter with the Brown family leads to an invitation to stay, naturally a series of hilarious fish-out-of-water moments ensue. Add into the mix a sinister taxidermist (a very funny Kidman channelling Cruella De Vil) with her own less-than-friendly agenda, & I challenge anyone with a heart not to enjoy this ride. BTW - should you ever meet P, under no circumstances let him anywhere near your toothbrush. You’ve been warned!!
