Movie Review #2: 22 Jump Street. So I didnt see the first movie. It came out before I started seeing every movie possible. Plus it contained one vital flaw: I hate Jonah Hill. Hes such an annoying little dweeb I want to run over him with a lawn mower every time he opens his mouth. But dont let that stop you from seeing this movie. Two observations: (1) this is not a good movie, but (2) it is a very funny movie. While I hate despise Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum really has a gift for comedy. The story is secondary to the comedy but provides the opportunity to promote much of the comedy. The supporting cast is relatively good with the exception of Ice Cube. The man cannot act at all but he does a good job of feigning anger at a particular point in the movie. But this is more a function of Hill and Tatums reaction than to his acting skill. The actual subplot is how they are really like a married couple after the honeymoon is over. 2/3 of the humor relates to this subplot and is really very funny. This is not deep humor or anything; this is all very sophomoric (it does mostly take place on a college campus which oddly resembles a Soviet apartment complex) and crude but works in the context of their particular chemistry. This is not for children but also not quite as crude as other movies out there. The violence is more comedic than anything but the language is the reason for the R rating. There are periods of great comedy here. Tatums (pretend?) stupidity and Hills (actual?) moronitude are the primary elements which dont really work separately but dovetail nicely together. Hard to recommend for ALL audiences but if you like sophomoric humor this is a great movie. Not for children. Not a bad date movie. Recommend for matinee showings for the price but possibly acceptable for full price. 4 of 5 with a 0.5 swing either way depending on your philosophical inclinations. A little higher for matinee viewings.
