Movie Review No7-By Connor-Stevenson Wright Batman Begins review (This review will contain minor spoilers) Batman Begins stars Christian Bale, Liam Neeson, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Cillian Murphy and Katie Holmes. The film was directed by Christopher Nolan who like Paul Thomas Anderson, Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese, The Coen Brothers and Steven Spielberg he is one of the best living directors of the 21st century. The plot of Batman Begins is simple. It is about the origins of the Dark Knight Legend and what influenced Bruce Wayne to become Batman. This film is the batman film that explores Batmans backstory the most out of all of the films about Batman. It starts from his parents death, to his training with the league of shadows all the way to Bruces return to Gotham becoming the legend that is Batman. In my opinion the Nolan Batman films are truly the best acted. Christian Bale is perhaps my favourite Batman. Ok maybe his voice can turn some people of of him but its intimidating and would Batman really have the same voice as the famous millionaire Bruce Wayne. Christian Bale does a fantastic job at playing this man who left society to embark on a quest to become a symbol. But he also plays the cocky millionaire side of the character that the press sees and his performance of The Dark Knight is intimidating. And You feel Waynes motives to fight crime through Bales acting. He originally wanted revenge for the deaths of his parents but after the killer got killed he had to change his motives. Its truly fantastic. Gary Oldman does a fantastic job at portraying Detective Jim Gordon. I think Jim Gordon is one of Oldmans best roles. It isnt as over the top as all of his other roles and its nice and calm yet he has his strong presence and I love it when an actor does something that they wouldnt normally do (especially Oldman as he is one of the best in the business). Liam Neeson is great as Raus Al Ghoul. I wouldnt say its his best role but the guy played Oskar Schindler so it is still pretty damn good. He just portrays the mentor figure to Bruce terrifically. Cillian Murphy is good as the scarecrow. Sure he isnt no Joker but he is good with what he is given. Michael Caine is great as Alfred and Morgan Freeman is great as Lucius Fox. They do great as portraying the two men who help Batman in different ways. Alfred as the butler and Lucius as the tech man for Batman. The only weak link is Katie Holmes as Rachel. She seems a bit bland and I much preferred Maggie Gyllenhaal as Rachel. But apart from Holmes the cast is phenomenal. This film isnt the best made Batman film but it is still phenomenal. The cinematography by Wally Pfiester is brilliant. It features the neo-noirish feel of his films like Memento and Insomnia. The colour scheme is interesting. A brownish tint. I love how each film in the trilogy has a different colour scheme. Batman Begins is brown, The Dark knight is blu and The Dark Knight Rises is grey. Only complaint about the cinematography is that in Begins the action is shaky. But it isnt a big problem and Nolan resolved it for the next which is good and it was his first film with big fights in so it is an easy mistake. The score is awesome sure it isnt 1989s which is my favourite Batman score but it is still good. The direction by Nolan is awe inspiring here. It captures the darkness of the Dark Knight himself. I personally think the direction is the best in The Dark Knight but it is still expertly crafted. Overall in my opinion Batman Begins was the first proper batman film where Batman felt like batman. I loved the Burton films but I prefer this Batman. Its not the best in the trilogy but it is a modern classic and it is truly well made. Even though its got a few flaws I do class it as a perfect film as the flaws are mere nit picks. If you havent seen this film get out of that rock you have been living and watch it. 10/10 Next week will be the amazing masterpiece that is The Dark knight
