Movie review. Lone Survivor, circa 2013, starring Mark Wahlberg - TopicsExpress

Movie review. Lone Survivor, circa 2013, starring Mark Wahlberg as Marcus Luttrell and Ben Foster as Matthew Axe Axelson; directed by Peter Berg, well known as a TV director for Virtuality (movie) and Prime Suspect (TV series) and not overlooking the hit Cinematic movie Hancock, starring Will Smith; this is an exceptionally classy film. The film portrays the very real and true events surrounding the insertion of a small elite SEAL (Sea, Air and Land special operatives), team deep into Afghanistan territory in order to secure or eliminate a Taliban person of interest in 2005. At this point, I have no wish to be a spoiler, though the name of the film itself does give you some direction on where it will go. That would be the only single thing I would change about this film, just the name. Operation Redwing, for example, might have been a better choice, as that was the designated title for this incredible military excursion. It is after all a true story and that always adds weight to the viewing experience. That said, this film is brilliantly presented to the screen, outstanding performances by the cast, amazing attention to detail regarding the Modus Operandi of this elite and and amazing group of soldiers with realistic and sometimes confrontational attention to true military action involving lethal force and the concept of survival. Saving private Ryan, starring Tom hanks and directed by Steven Spielberg circa 1998, set the benchmark for this type of film and did a fantastic job. That film will stand alone as one of a kind, always. Films like this one Lone Survivor, just push that premise a little further, bringing into our lounge-rooms on big-screen TVs from the amazing clarity of Blu-ray, the true reality and horror of war and what it means to be a soldier, no matter what your cause young or old. Viewing tip - keep a close eye on what is happening in the background and some of the conversations between soldiers. . . . you will not be disappointed. A brilliantly conceived film, realistic and gritty with an awesome sound backing, this film is a must see for anyone with any interest at all regarding the fortunes of War of our brave and ordinary soldiers. An excellent view. Scores 9.5/10
