Moviepham’s Top 10 Movies of 2013 10/60 Thank you to everyone who entered my competition, and I hope you enter the next one too. 1st Prize of a double pass to Event Cinemas Gold Class goes to Kellia Chiu 2nd Prize of a double pass to Event Cinemas goes to Indi Norling Bennett The 3 Dvds go to: - Chloe Lim - Ian Lin - Sherwin Titus On to the top 10 10. The Imitation Game This is a biographical movie that was actually entertaining like The Kings Speech a few years ago. It had a brilliant cast – notably Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley, and an excellent story that does get bogged down at times with its flash forwards but overall it was a well-crafted film that is also very enjoyable. 9. Gone Girl Rosamund Pike. She was just so good in this film, I cannot think of another actress that has done a better job than her this year that I have seen. David Fincher is excellent at setting up the ominous atmosphere and although I gave this film a lower rating, I can’t help thinking about its many twists even after a few months. This movie was beautiful to watch, excellent performances and an interesting storyline that had me the whole time. 8. Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes I have said it before and I will say it again, I love apes. This was by far the best apes movie in the franchise with Andy Serkis going full ape but also his co-star Toby Kebbell equally as good. Lots of interesting themes and brilliant action sequences. The best thing though, would have to be an ape dual-wielding light machine guns on horseback, which is one of my favourite scenes in movies this year. I can only hope the sequel to this can be just as good. 7. Guardians Of The Galaxy This is probably the funnest movie of the year, something that you can just put on and watch over and over again. Filled with laughs, Groot, and one of the best soundtracks since Dazed and Confused (1993). Guardians is a perfect blend of space action and comedy with great characters and something I knew would be excellent from the first trailer. This was Marvel showing off just how far they’ve come, taking unknown property and making it one of their biggest hits. If you choose to analyse it a bit it may seem not as great, but who cares, “I Am Groot.” 6. Captain America: The Winter Soldier Captain America is my favourite avenger and this movie not only surpassed the first movie, but showed everyone just how cool someone with a shield could be. Who would expect that directors of Community could make such an excellent action spy thriller. Not only does this film have an excellent story line, but it also transcends other Marvel properties including Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. It also introduced Falcon, let Black Widow do some more cool things, and the Winter Soldier was an excellent villain. 5. Whiplash If you haven’t seen Whiplash, go see Whiplash, it is excellent. J.K Simmons and Miles Teller really do give some of the best performances of the year. Also blood and tears literally went into the making of the film, Miles Teller went through months of jazz drum training to make it look as real as possible, which it really does. The intensity of the film is incredible, with the psychological warfare between the two leads so incredible that it will leave you breathless. No surprise that there is also great music that will leave you yearning for more jazz. 4. Nightcrawler How many characters can you think of that are as sociopathic as Lou Bloom? He is possibly one of the most interesting characters in recent memory. This was such an intense thriller that will keep you entertained from start to finish. With excellent commentary on the American Dream, the current state of media and news, and Jake Gyllenhaal giving another excellent performance, this is clearly one of the best films of the year. 3. Interstellar This may not be my favourite Christopher Nolan movie, it is still one of my favourites of the year. I love the score, the characters (especially Mackenzie Foy), and the way most of the story is perpetuated by scientific theories was just so entertaining. Seeing the beauty of the black holes and worm holes they spent hours rendering in IMAX was just mind blowing. It can be heavy handed with its theme of love but I still found it to be entertaining, emotional and thought provoking. 2. The Raid 2: Berandal For most of the year I thought this film would be no.1 on my list. A sequel to one of the best action movies, Berandal expands from the first on almost every level. Not crammed into a single building anymore leads to large set pieces, like the prison scene, amazing chase sequences and multiple new characters like Hammer Girl and Baseball Bat Man. The film does slow down at times for a complicated plot of backstabbing and corruption but when it gets back to the action it is incredible. The kitchen scene alone makes it worthy of this list. Every time I watch it, I just can’t help but smile because of how awesome this movie is. Although not no.1, this is still one of my favourite films of all time. Honourable Mentions: The Lego Movie: Thought it was going to be stupid but instead it was awesome. X-Men: Days Of Future Past: Redeemed the whole series and was so much fun. The Grand Budapest Hotel: Amazing comedy by Wes Anderson with possibly the best ensemble cast of the year. Edge Of Tomorrow: Excellent action, excellent comedy, and Emily Blunt. Not just another Tom Cruise movie. Predestination: Time travel movie which is really intriguing. Movies yet to be released in Australia that could influence Top 10: - Birdman - Selma - Foxcatcher - Inherent Vice 1. Boyhood Richard Linklater has made some of the best movies ever in my opinion, like Dazed and Confused, the Before Trilogy, and Waking Life. Over 12 years of filming Ellar Coltrane grow up, he has made the definitive growing up movie. Not only do you see him physically grow up, but they have perfectly encapsulated the 2000s in a movie that is absolutely incredible. This is a movie that is a must see, especially for those who also grew up in the 2000s who will enjoy the little moments in the film, like Harry Potter at midnight and Dragon Ball Z. The way this film documents moments in life that you might be able to relate to, like parents divorcing, moving away from friends is just phamtastic. This is an amazing cinematic achievement that must be seen. #top10 #2014 https://youtube/watch?v=MV9MCLS1Ji8
