Moving Backwards or Forward in Time, Checking in Occasionally with the Now,... It All Works Out. Somehow! --Paul Hampton Crockett _______ Was it just yesterday, or one afternoon in 1911, that we paid a visit to a clean and free-flowing Little River, when the Earth was so much younger? Whatever the case, you might remember the observation made in our glossy full-color imaginary travelogue, to the effect that if you are lucky, you may see a flock of flamingos flying in formation high above, a cloud of pink and scarlet in motion, momentarily darkening the sky. True story: to my complete surprise, just last night I chanced upon the image below in a beautifully illustrated 1923 edition of The Flamingo Feather by Coconut Grove pioneer and celebrated author of adventure fiction for young people, Kirk Munroe (1850 - 1930). (The illustration decorates its endpapers.) The tale is an imagined extravaganza based upon the historical fact of the early encounter between the native peoples and the hapless early Huguenot settlers. Munroe was certainly larger than life, and himself *at least* as much of a story as anything he ever penned, and the same could definitely be said of his first wife and true love, Mary Barr Munroe (1883-1922). They had both recently captured my interest especially, however, for their unusual role in inspiring neighbor James Deering to name his new property along the bay Vizcaya. Youll be hearing more about that one right here, so stay tuned! In the meantime, I hope you will enjoy the pictures. Thank you.
