Moyes rues poor goals David Moyes rued conceding what he described as “two poor goals” on the counter-attack after his Manchester United side had dominated possession against Everton at Goodison Park. The boss returned to his high-flying former club hoping the Reds could get a result to help spark a strong finish to a disappointing campaign. Ultimately, he was left further frustrated that his players couldn’t find the killer instinct to match some positive possession play. “We gave away two terrible goals,” Moyes admitted. “But I thought prior to that we passed the ball brilliantly well. We kept the ball and had great control of the game. What we couldn’t do was create enough chances. They were two poor goals to give away, both on the break. “We didn’t have a final through-pass or the final finish when the [chances] came, and there weren’t very many of them. So that was the disappointing part, that we couldn’t do that. The job is to win football matches. There is a lot talked about style, but it’s more important to win, and we didn’t do that.” Moyes had no arguments about the penalty decision that led to Leighton Baines’ opener, as Phil Jones handled Romelu Lukaku’s shot inside the area. Everton’s second also came on the counter-attack after United surrendered possession. “I think Everton played a similar game against Arsenal, when they got a result the other week,” Moyes added on Sky Sports. “The position of Lukaku allows them to counter-attack.” Prior to kick-off, few harboured genuine hopes that United might capitalise on the mathematical possibility of making it into the top four. However, this defeat definitely ruled out that equation, a reality that Moyes says is a painful one. “It does hurt,” he said. “It [Champions League football] is part of this club and we want to be in it. We’ll do everything we can to get ourselves back in it as quickly as we can.” With only four games left, attentions are already turning to next season and the rebuilding work that Moyes feels is essential to take United back to the top of the game in England and Europe. “We’re already doing that behind the scenes,” he said. “We’ll do everything we can to get a team capable of winning better than we have done recently.” #H17
