Mozambique to cover costs of cease-fire observers mission Jose Pacheco, the government delegation chief at the talks with the Mozambique National Resistance (Renamo), said after the end of the 49th round of talks on 2 April that the Mozambican Government will pay the costs of having international observers monitoring the armed conflict cessation process in the country. It is clearly stated in the reference terms that funding issues are the Mozambican Governments responsibility. We will assess how to do this via the various financial resources that the government has for military operations, investment, and economic and social development in the country, Pacheco explained. Nine countries will be involved in the monitoring operation, namely Botswana, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Cape Verde, and Kenya (from Africa), as well as Italy, Portugal, Britain (from Europe), and the Unites States. The central command of the! monitoring mission created at the talks on 31 March, will be led by Botswana, helped by Italy and Zimbabwe. According to the Renamo delegations chief, Saimone Macuiane, subunits will be created to work in the provinces. Thus Portugal will lead the mission in Nampula, Kenya in Tete, Britain in Sofala, and Botswana in Inhambane. At the 2 April meeting the sides failed to agree on how long the conflict cessation monitoring mission will operate in the country. By Alfredo Manjate
