Mpanda — KATAVI regional government plans to look for foreign markets for the surplus maize stocks realized this harvesting season, including DR Congo, Rwanda, Burundi and Kenya. The revelation was made by Katavi Regional Commissioner, Dr Rajab Rutengwe, in an interview held here ahead of World Food Day, whose climax is being marked at the national level today. Dr Rutengwe said that the decision to scout for foreign markets came in the wake of surplus maize stocks realized following bumper harvests this season. He hinted that the regional leadership planned to visit neighbouring countries in efforts to mitigate the problem after the National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) in Sumbawanga Zone has made it clear that it would purchase only 5,000 tonnes of maize. Farmers this harvesting season have realized 696,404 tonnes of different types of food crops including maize, cassava and rice, but maize alone accounts for 289,413 tonnes and rice 155,274 tonnes
