Mr Anshul mittal, graduated from USLLS in 2012. During his college years (2007-2012), he was an all-round participant actively involved in Co-Curricular, Sports and Organisation of events apart from Academics. After his LL.B. (Hons.) degree, he took up Litigation as a profession and joined S.K. Mittal & Co. Currently, he is a Senior Associate in the office of Mr. S.K. Mittal and also pursuing his independent career as a hardcore Litigation Lawyer practicing in Supreme Court, Delhi High Court and various District Courts in Delhi. Apart from regular litigation, he is a Panel Lawyer for various Private Companies like Tivoli Group of Hotels & Resorts, Seven Seas Hospitality, AMR Infrastructures, etc. Cheers! Here you go : Q.1) Tell us about your schooling and background. What inspired the law school decision? A) I did my schooling from Bal Bharati Public School, Rajender Nagar, New Delhi and passed out in 2007. Despite being in Science (Non-Med) Stream in my +2, I always wanted to pursue Law as a career. Coming from a family of lawyers, I was always inspired by my Uncle. The charm, fame and monetary returns this profession offers while at the same time providing the respect and importance in the society always captivated me. Being born on the Law Day, elders in my family also used to joke that I was destined to do Law. Though I cleared the entrance for NLU Jodhpur as well, I preferred taking admission in USLLS, IP University since it is situated in the hub of all litigation, Delhi. And after joining this profession, I am proud of my decision. Q.2) Mooting. Unnecessarily glorified or a stepping stone? A) Mooting has always been a passion for me. It is an important part of every Lawyer’s Training. Even for those who wish to get into Corporate Sector. Mooting not only help the budding Lawyers in preparing themselves for Court Crafting and Oratory Skills but also train their research skills, team work and professionalism. Mooting is also a socialising event where one interacts with students, professors and professionals from different parts of the country and beyond and learns the development and application of law from exchange of experiences. I was an active Mooter during my college days and participated in 6 Mooting Competitions (5 National and 1 International Moot). I won Best Student Advocate Award at the 3rd Jamia Milia Islamia National Moot Court Competition, 2009 and my team bagged the prize for 2nd Best Memorial at the Phillip C. Jessups International Moot Court (India North Rounds), 2011. Q.3) What is your current work profile? A) I am a Senior Associate in the office of Mr. S.K. Mittal and also pursuing my independent career as a hardcore Litigation Lawyer practicing in Delhi High Court, District Courts and various other Forums/Tribunals. Apart from regular litigation, I am a Panel Lawyer for various Private Companies like Tivoli Group of Hotels & Resorts, Seven Seas Hospitality, AMR Infrastructures, etc. I have a diversified litigation practice with major focus on Trials, both Civil and Criminal. Q.4) Your entire USLLS experience. Any special person(s) you would like to mention? A) USLLS has been a wonderful experience for me. USLLS helped me in being independent and self-reliant. Unlike the Nationals, the faculty in USLLS encouraged us to learn the law beyond the books. The regular discussions during the lectures regarding the practical application of the legal principles really help us on the professional front. Mentioning any particular name would not be justified since there were many who inspired me but I must express my gratitude to the entire faculty and my best friends for helping and guiding me in their own ways. Q.5) The world beyond the race for “who-wants-to-be-the-next-amarchand-partner”. Your take. In other words, please elaborate on the alternative career choices that a person graduating from a Law School today would have, other than “placements”. A) Having high goals in life is very important if one wishes to be successful. Whether as a Litigation Lawyer or a Corporate Lawyer, is purely a personal choice. Today, the frequent internships that the students have been undertaking have opened up a plethora of opportunities. Placements are not the only options for getting a job or starting your career now. Apart from the regular occupation of being a Litigation Lawyer or a Corporate Lawyer, options like Law Researchers, Law Officers in Public and Private Sector Undertakings, Retainer, Legal Analysts, Consultants with NGOs and other organisations, etc. are also available for law students. They can now choose from a variety of professions as per their own suiting. Q.6) Your interests in the world beyond law A) I like socialising and prefer to catch up with my friends whenever I get time. I also love playing cricket and listening to music. Q.7) Considering that the students studying in National law universities and the students studying in USLLS have a different learning environment altogether, any piece of advice for them? A) My only advice would be that you should not consider yourself to be at any disadvantage merely because you are not studying in a National. Be it any career in Law that one wishes to pursue, everything depends on your skills and hard work. Our college’s internship programme gives us an opportunity to prove ourselves and thus, it ultimately comes down to how you perform at whatever place you join as an intern/associate. So do your work honestly and sincerely and rewards shall always follow irrespective of your college name.
