Mr Beach Footwear Romney flip-flops on global warming by Christopher Monckton of Brenchley In British stores, beach sandals are known as flip-flops. Mitt Romney, whom the Republicans unerringly chose as the one Presidential candidate who could not possibly beat Mr Obama in 2012, and who has made a specialism of flip-flopping on major questions of policy, is now flip-flopping on global warming, presumably in the hope that the GOP will choose him to fail again in 2016. He may not have noticed that most Republicans have seen through the global warming scam. He need only look at the recent Senate vote on the subject, where only two or three intellectually-challenged RINOs voted with the “Democrats”. Romney’s religious belief in the New Religion of Thermageddon has always been strong. Some years ago a fellow-Mormon very senior in the Republican Party contacted him and offered to arrange a briefing with skeptical scientists so that he could at least hear their arguments. He was uninterested. For once had made up what passes for his mind, but had done so in opposition to the truth. However, until now Mr Flippety-Flop has taken the view, correctly, that even if the planet was warming (which, in the past 18 years 3 months, it has not been), it would be counter-productive to do anything about it. In his 2012 campaign he said America should not divert resources to dealing with it. Amen to that, bro. However, Mr Beach Footwear has flip-flopped on this as on so much else. Now he says one of the nation’s greatest challenges is climate change and it is urgent that global action be taken to tackle this non-problem. As usual, this least consistent, least credible and least attractive of politicians – recall that it was he who allowed himself to be overheard saying that the 47% of Americans who did not contribute to the Treasury’s coffers by paying taxes did not matter and he was not going to waste any time courting them – has flip-flopped on to the bandwagon just as the wheels are coming off. Last week I wrote about the single rogue equation built into the climate models that is solely responsible for multiplying by 3 the small and harmless direct global warming caused by our returning to the air some of the CO2 that was there before. Now I can report that our paper in Science Bulletin, the journal of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Orient’s leading journal of science, has reached almost 10,000 downloads of either the summary or the whole paper in just a couple of weeks. That is a staggering number for a learned paper on a scientific question. You can download it from scibull. Just click on Current Issue and find our paper. Do it now, file it carefully and you will own a piece of history. Why do I say the paper may yet prove to be historic? Well, the news that the sole reason for the models’ extreme predictions of dangerously rapid global warming is a single equation that belongs in electronic circuits but does not belong in the climate has caused dismay and alarm throughout the leftosphere and among the profiteers of doom. They are terrified. They are falling over themselves in their limp-wristed and inept attempts to condemn the paper. Some can be proven not to have read it. Why read it, when the Party Line says there is a climate problem and it says the Party Line is wrong? The largest daily paper in Germany, the Süddeutsche Zeitung, devoted a leading article to attacking it. The largest quality daily in the UK, the Daily Mail, wrote an article strongly supporting it. But the most interesting piece of news that emerged as a result of our paper’s publication is that a leading expert in climate feedbacks – one of the top half dozen in the world – has now decided that our conclusion that the warming to be expected from a doubling of CO2 concentration is 1 Cº, and not the 3, 5 or even 10 degrees fancifully imagined by the UN’s climate panel and the more excitable of climate “scientists”, is if anything on the high side. He has written a paper about his conclusions and is now shepherding it through peer review at a leading climate-science journal in the West. A mutual friend got in touch to tell me this. But he begged me not to reveal the good doctor’s name, for he has until recently argued for the Party Line, and the faithful will not take kindly to his having been influenced by the hated climate “deniers”. It is sad that climate “science” has sunk to such an abyss of intellectual bankruptcy that even an eminent doctor of physics now lives in fear that the climate Communists will viciously penalize him merely for having had scientific discussions with some of the Unpersons who have enough wit and courage to question the Party Line. But that is nationalized science for you. What Mr Beach Footwear should have said is that the outrageous and hate-filled bullying of those who have genuine scientific doubts about the ridiculous exaggerations of Man’s negligible and harmless future impact on climate must stop, and academic freedom of thought and expression must be restored. But no. Flip-flop has gotten it wrong. Again. And, in the unlikely event that the GOP nominates him, he will learn for the fourth time that to flip is to flop.
