Mr. Friedman, it is because we have granted to government such uncontrolled powers that the 2001 attacks happened in the first place; they were in reality retribution for the imperialistic abuses of the US and British empires. What the current leaders of the drive to further our imperialism did was ensure that these abuses will only continue through the passage and renewal of the Patriot Act. So, yes, sir, we are acutely aware of why the 2001 attacks happened and the utter lack of response by our leadership to change our policies to truly ensure that such attacks never happen again. Perhaps, Mr. Friedman, you noticed that the handmaiden of our plutocracy, the media, started to ignore the Boston bombers once it became clear that they were rational citizens who were opposed to the Iraq invasion that caused the genocide of 400-600 thousand Muslim civilians? "But as I listen to the debate about the disclosure of two government programs designed to track suspected phone and e-mail contacts of terrorists, I do wonder if some of those who unequivocally defend this disclosure are behaving as if 9/11 never happened -- that the only thing we have to fear is government intrusion in our lives, not the intrusion of those who gather in secret cells in Yemen, Afghanistan and Pakistan and plot how to topple our tallest buildings or bring down U.S. airliners with bombs planted inside underwear, tennis shoes or computer printers." - Tom Friedman - NY Times I am sorry, Mr. Friedman, but we need to see the truth of what is being done in the name of "protecting" us so that we can stop this endless loop of violence. huffingtonpost/2013/06/14/jeremy-scahill-thomas-friedman-ny-times-la-la-land_n_3441203.html
