Mr Kwa Eng Kiat is the man who once oversaw operations at the Esplanade and also set up the Singapore Air Show in Changi. He upped and left for this more meaningful existence- running a halfway house for orphans in Cambodia (wth a local café bsns model). See how happy he is relaxing at this Hammock Café in Phnom Penh? He just followed that calling and a different heartbeat. Yan Lin is a young entrepreneur by blood.. left her teaching job and set up a guest house (Trailblazers Guesthouse ) in Cambodias capital, with no prior experience I just felt like doing it. She takes her guest out to makan safaris (Eat Cambodia) and tours and this Hammock Café is just one gem (even my local Cambodian frens dunno abt it) in her itinerary. They offer true blue Khmer food- like a curry fried fish in mimosa salad (touch me nots), a snail ormok (otah) and a less spicy tom yum like hotpot soup. I applaud n a standing ovation for these Singaporeans and I know there are many out there like them too. Big bold hearted and innovative with an entrepreneurial spirit. They take the road less beaten and get somewhere somehow- no humdrum corporate life and MRT line going in Circles for them. I will be back to create some new dishes and cook for Mr Kwa;s Hope Garden Café and go on that Eat Cambodia makan safari. who wanna join? Chefs can also do a one weekend special set meal and give takings to the orphanage too. Makansutra
