Mr. Obama, you deserve enormous credit for your dogged pursuit of the al-Qaeda leadership. Even your (not so) loyal opposition feels obliged to give you kudos. As you removed the last American soldiers from Iraq and continue the draw down of troops in Afghanistan, you maintain an aggressive and relentless attack on known terrorists. So far, so good. But when we are faced with another terrorist group, ISIL (ISIS), you leap right back into the Iraq quagmire. Why? Having a prime time nationwide television address regarding ISIL was a mistake. ISIL murdered two American journalists. Those directly responsible should be hunted down and killed just like Osama bin Laden. Any terrorism foisted on American citizens should result in an asymmetrically severe penalty. Those most effected by this compilation of radical Sunnis called ISIL are the balance of the Sunni populations in countries like Egypt, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Syria, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. These Arab nations have the military capability, mostly supplied by us, to exterminate the 30,000 barbarians that are ISIL. Instead they just “hold our coat” while we do all the heavy lifting. We spent years and dollars training what was supposed to be an Iraqi army only to have them disintegrate at the first sign of combat. We created an environment for a democratic inclusive government only to see Prime Minister Maliki squander the opportunity by fostering sectarian strife and Sunni isolation. Some problems simply cannot be fixed with “Americanized” solutions. Instead of ramping up our activities in the area we should be completing our evacuation. The sectarian bitterness dates back to 632A.D. and there is no chance for political resolution or military submission.
