Mr. President, You spoke yesterday about the decision from of a NY Grand Jury to not return an indictment involving the death of Eric Garner. You opened your remarks with: Some of you may have heard there was a decision that came out today by a grand jury not to indict police officers who had interacted with an individual with Eric Garner in New York City, all of which was caught on videotape and speaks to the larger issues that we’ve been talking about now for the last week, the last month, the last year, and, sadly, for decades, and that is the concern on the part of too many minority communities that law enforcement is not working with them and dealing with them in a fair way. I note with sadness that nowhere in your remarks do you say that YOU have confidence in local law enforcement nor do you defend our legal system that, whatever its occasional flaws, is the envy of the world and likely about the best that a system operated as it is by flawed human beings can achieve. You, Mr. President, speak in a manner that seems intended to combine together this tragic incident and the unfortunate death of Michael Brown. Then you point out that the takeaway issue or problem here is the concern on the part of too many minority communities that law enforcement is not working with them and dealing with them in a fair way. But Mr President, the truth is that the public confidence in the police is consistently almost twice their confidence in the Presidency during your administration [Police 58% vs Presidency 36%] (See gallop poll on Confidence in Institutions). Your unwillingness to acknowledge this truth undermines both the stability of and respect for law and order (as we saw last week in Ferguson) while instead falsely inflating your position. When will you initiate a task force to advise how to strengthen the relationship between your administration and segments of the country that feel that political bias is taking place? When are you going to be scrupulous in showing that your administration is really concerned about the impartiality and accountability that needs to be taking place within it? You say you are committed as President to the core principle that we are equal under the law. Prove it in your own house before you throw rocks at another house (the local police) that is NOT under your legal jurisdiction or control. Take the beam out of you own eye sir.
