Mr. Roger Goodell Happy Holidays and I hope this email finds you and family well during this wonderful season. I am writing you this day to express my concerns and sadness of the current actions that have been express by some of the NFLs athletes. Let me first preface this letter by saying in my 47 years of living I have written less than 5 letters to organizations/persons regarding my concerns. Since you have been the commissioner over the greatest sport in the world (my opinion), I have watched you face many challenges and have been impressed with your leadership in the NFL. But what my family and I witnessed last Sunday with the Minnesota Vikings players was too much. I completely understand that we are all human and at times need to express or convey the things that we are passionate about, but for players to use a situation that is dividing our nation for their own agenda is wrong. These athletes have been hired to do their job(s) and to represent the NFL and to bring competitive entertainment to the supporters of the NFL. When I heard that the NFL ( you Mr. Goodell) were going to nothing for the tasteless display conducted by these players, DEEPLY saddened me! My family, which includes my beautiful wife Lisa of 21 years, my 2 sons (a 19-year-old freshman in college, and a 17-year-old senior considering a career in the Navy), and my two daughters (ages 13 and 10) have made Sunday Football a family gathering tradition for over 18 years, had to endure this disgraceful display by these players in a sport that we love so dearly. I remember in the not so distant past, when athletes played the game for the betterment of the team and not their own agenda. I remember when coaches would bench a player for getting out of line and the other members of the team would emphasizing how much that individual had let them down. I remember when Chris Carter took responsibility in shaping, molding and being a role model for Randy Moss so that he would be a success in the NFL outside of his immense talent. I (we) are just saddened to see that the NFL is heading down the same path that the NBA started down about 15 years ago and seems to be more politically, money, and self motivated. With that said, I want you to know that I am a STAUNCH believer in the First Amendment and fully believe its every Americans God given right to stand for their beliefs NO matter if they differs from mine, but should be take place in the proper forum. The NFL and their representatives should concentrate on bringing American Football to the fans in the most dignified fashion and leave their own agenda on the sidelines. Even though we as Americans may differ on politics, religious beliefs, etc. we should be able to come together to enjoy a non-bias sporting competition put on by the greatest athletes in the world while cheering on our favorite team. In conclusion, I am a big supporter of you and the job you have done, but I (we) are very disappointed in your last decision you made to sit on the sidelines and not address these behaviors. I completely understand how busy you must be and may not ever see this letter, but felt it important to express my concerns regarding this matter. May God Bless you and your family. Sincerely, David Coppock and family
