Mr.Sarath Fernando -a personal Tribute It was last evening that we saw a superb portrait of him by Mr.Bertie Gunasekara and talked about him,not knowing he has passed away. I came to know him through environmental and agricultural work and he,with his two brothers,was very active in the agricultural activities.He was foremost in defending the rights of farmers and was in the forefront of all issues. He was well read,updated,and fearless,outspoken and articulate qualities that endeared him to us but made him a bitter enemy of still others. He was a chain smoker,which led to his ill-health and may have contributed to this untimely death too. We got along well,despite having opposing political views,but nevertheless agreed fully on environmental and agricultural issues.Both of us refrained from talking the contentious things but discussed those things where we could agree up on and work together.
