Mr Turner - No Spoiler Review Timothy Spall stars as Joseph Mallord William Turner. Better known as William Turner, generally accepted as one of Worlds greatest painters. Directed by Mike Leigh, Mr Turner focuses on the last 25 years of Turners life, and reveals a tortured but brilliant man, who found solace in his work and the simplicity of a beautiful seascape. After the untimely death of his mother who had been committed to a mental asylum, the young Turner showed a skill and a passion for painting and was accepted in to The Royal Academy. He quickly became a favourite of the aristocracy and was one of the painters who was famous during his lifetime and able to make a good living from his work. Spalls depiction of Turner is one to behold, his jump from anarchic behaviour amongst his colleagues at The Academy is set against his gentler side, reserved for his Mistress, and then his total disregard for a doting housemaid, who he treats with almost complete disdain, is fantastically balanced. His mannerisms and grunting speech, if owned by anyone else, would lead you to believe that this a man of little decorum or intellect, but Turner seems to use this to his advantage to draw in unwary pseudo art lovers who would dare to question the merits of former artists who, like himself, challenged dogmatic approaches to painting a picture. In keeping with a film that revolves around art and a love of scapes, there is sometime wonderful cinematography that shows off the British countryside and coastlines at their most beautiful. To sum up, this is a great, mini biopic, of what is probably the most interesting part of Turners chaotic life. If you want to go and see some superb character acting, then Mr Turner is not to be missed. But if you Transformers is in your Top 5 films, then this one probably isnt for you! 4 out 5 brushstrokes Cert 12A 150 Minutes youtube/watch?v=Tn4zSR_5ioI
