Ms. Covington, Thank you for sharing. I appreciate the advocacy on behalf of Haddon Hall families and their preference to maintain Baucom as their Traditional base school. I also agree with you that there is more demand for traditional calendar seats in the west Cary, Apex and Holly Springs areas than we are able to accommodate. This is frustrating for our staff and our Board and is related to the lack of adequate funding to build adequate school capacity in those areas. All of the new elementary and middle schools opened under the previous Capital Improvement Program of 2006 were opened as multi-track year-round calendars because this schedule allows for 25 to 30% more students to be accommodated in the same campus. It is our current intention to open the majority of new schools being funded by the 2013 Capital Improvement Program on the traditional calendar to alleviate the imbalance between supply and demand for these seats. Scotts Ridge ES is the first step in that direction. It is the only new elementary school opening in the southwestern area next year and it will open on a traditional calendar. Others will be opening in 2016 and 2017 and we should hope to have an appropriate balance in a few years. Your neighborhood has been given Scotts Ridge as your second traditional option school and the WCPSS assignment staff folks have indicated that they do not foresee an issue with Haddon Hall families receiving seats at Baucom for the time being, so your chances of continuing to attend a traditional calendar elementary school are far better than several other areas in the southwestern part of the county. There is a bigger concern over crowding at Apex Middle over the next few years, until the middle school that is planned adjacent to Apex Friendship High opens. This planned new middle school (M11) is targeted to be on the traditional calendar but will not open until the 2018-2019 school year. It is my understanding that this is likely the driving force behind leaving your neighborhood base assigned to Salem ES/Salem MS. There simply may not be the physical ability to accommodate all the students who apply for a seat at Apex Middle, who do not already live in the base base attendance area, including those for whom it is a calendar option. This is not a favorable situation, but an unfortunate reality. I am happy to continue to answer clarifying questions if you have them. Sincerely, Susan P. Evans
