Ms McCabe I was very proud of my sons efforts to progress - TopicsExpress

Ms McCabe I was very proud of my sons efforts to progress through the ranks of junior rugby league to the point where he traveled overseas as a schoolboy to represent his country. He was a beautifully balanced athlete with outstanding speed and his grace was wonderful to watch. Like millions of other rugby league parents and fans, we understood the physical nature of the sport and the risks that were part and parcel of it. Just like motocross, auto racing, horse racing, boxing, the martial arts, water sports, snow skiing (Schumachers in a coma) hang gliding, sky diving, AFL, rugby union et al. My son, despite training his arse off, never made it to first grade. He did however distinguish himself as a courageous and valued team mate. He learned life lessons that have seen him succeed in business and as a husband and father. He played a game where courage goes hand in hand with athleticism, split second decision making and skill. More so than any other team sport. We supported every decision he ever made; including the one to call it quits. Alex McKinnons parents did the same and saw their son distinguish himself at the highest level. Your comments insulted every athlete and everyone who cares about these athletes and every sacrifice every parent has ever made and every fan of the sport. I apologize to them all on your behalf because Im sure that you wont. Whats worse, you did it from a standpoint of ignorance. Ignorance to every aspect of what makes people want to compete in any physical way, ignorance of the nuances of the sport and the years of relentless training and coaching and sacrifice that is required to reach the level Alex did. Your simplification of the sports objective was beneath an educated person like yourself which makes me think youre just a glorified publicity hound. I humbly ask you to confine yourself to the drivel your near obsolete magazine peddles. You are obviously more suited to edit the top 10 tips for your toddlers play date or beat your politically correct drum while ironically reporting on Miranda Kerrs lesbian fantasies. Know this; your contribution to our culture ranks as puerile at best and hypocritical at worst. Alex, his family and the RL community have more integrity in their pinkies and I wish them well hoping that your bleating is forgotten as your magazine should be. Steve Wren
