Much as I like the presence of the police on our roads for security, it is sadto note that the police cause unpalatable menace on our roads. One would think that now that they are paid well, the policemen would do the job of checking the nooks and crannies of the country and the vehicles on the road to ascertain that they are not bearing or harbouring security risks. Instead, policemen prefer taking N20/N50 as substitute for the security of this country. How on earth can a policeman stop a vehicle for a long time without telling the driver his offence and without any courtesy to the passengers in the vehicle? These passengers were returning homeafter the day’s toil! One of the passengers had to ask the policeman totell the driver who refused to offer money his offence and convict him rather than delay them there. And it wasgetting dark! The policeman offered to beat up the polite challenger.Where are we going in this country? My sincere advice for the police officers stationed at Emure-Ile and the entire Nigeria Police is that they should carry out their duties with the fear of God and save this country from collapse for lack of security. Now that the extortionists are back on our roads, the Acting Inspector-General of Police, Suleiman Abba, should declare his modus operandus as his predecessor, Muhammed Abubakar, did. He should remove extortionists who pretend to be police officers from our roads. When policemen add the job of Vehicle Inspection Officers and the Federal Road Safety Corps and turn roadblocks into tollgates, there will be no security in this country. Roles and schedules of duties of the police shouldbe clearly defined so that there will be no conflict between the Police and the FRSC on who should issue number plates and driving licence and get “big money” for “Oga” at the expense of the common people.
