Much has been said about scholarships for tertiary education but in fact; the Tertiary Education Loans Scheme as introduced by Khaiyum needs further scrutiny. Prior to the 2006 Coup, tertiary scholarships choices for students consist of the PSC, FAB, Multi Ethnic and of course those who do not qualify for the three mentioned scholarships can apply for the Loans Scheme. Whilst doing my undergrad, the only bond that you have if you are sponsored under the FAB/iTaukei Affairs or Multi Ethnic was to work for the country for the duration of years that you were sponsored. As for those who are PSC sponsored, they have to pay back one third of the total amount/cost of their education. The new Tertiary Education Loans Scheme is a bit different since students have to pay back all the amount spent on their education plus interest. Therefore, our new working graduates started off their career with debts and I doubt that they would have a chance to take a loan from the Banks for Housing since their names would be on the Data Bureau. I stand to be corrected on my opinions especially the Data Bureau part..
