Much is said about jungle/dnb not being as good as it was, but something I really do miss (and in bass music as a whole) is the roller. So much music is now reliant on the build up and the massive drop, and, aside from the drop, there isnt much else to the tune. No surprise really that the modern DJ set will include about 2 minutes of the tune, blending the next track in almost as soon as the previous drop. When a DJ set is Drop! Drop! Drop! the drop fails to have any more impact - like when you start yawning at an action film because theres been nothing but explosions for the last hour. I always liked rollers because the drums and the bass was the melody, the little nuances like the change of beat or bassline would keep the tune interesting, and these have always been tunes you can keep on dancing to. Its no surprise that people mosh at raves if the dynamic of the music is closer to metal than dance music. Rollers have also given the perfect dynamic for an MCs lyrics to flow as opposed to shoutily hyping the crowd like an aerobics instructor. Examples of a roller? This: youtube/watch?v=WXBYEQeNjBs
