Much like Empire Strikes Back - I struggled with this movie (though in general, I hate Star Wars regardless, so bad comparison on my part). It didnt feel like I was in the midst of a Tolkien-based epic, with too much CGI drawing me from out of the movie (Smaug was excellently realised, but I like my orcs to be real, fleshy and darned misshapen... and we wont mention that big effect towards the end ;) ) plus the pacing felt stodgy and unbalanced with too much focus on the boring setting of Lake Town (though I did feel the same about that section in the book to be fair). Shoe-horn in a much unneeded Legolas and apply a kick-in-the-face level of unsubtlety in linking through to Lord of the Rings with a weird sub-plot and the whole 2nd episode left me.. troubled. That said, I still want to be an elf and I want Tauriel to be my bride. Love at first sight! And the overall tone is suitably darker, with the big action scenes generally satisfying. I still hold out hope for the final part, but if all else fails, I have got the extended cuts of the LotR to go back to :) Ill give it a tentative 7/10. And my beloved Tauriel a glowing 15/10.
