Much of how we respond comes from a learned behavior. In 1969, 400 poorly paid black women -- hospital workers in Charleston, South Carolina had to respond in a whole new way. -- In SC, 32% of the population was Black; There was no Black legislators since RECONSTRUCTION ENDED; Tourism-booming economy for whites expansion of ports and defense; NO Black physicians or medical field students; ALL LOW PAID nurse aids were black (1968-1969) and Black Workers were core of low page sectors; still had segregation/ discrimination example: BLACK FATHERS WERE NOT ALLOWED IN DELIVERY ROOMS; lots of Blacks moved to city to find work once they left plantation. 400 Black Women went on strike under the guidance of the New York based union (District 1199) and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference
