Much of my painting is based on whats in front of me and also in equal measure on things I remember about what is not. Of course, I always wonder how close these memories are to the reality since I rely on them so much. Colors of things and their shadows, quality of light, the feeling of the place. So it is very interesting to be again here in Vilnius where I lived for five years 30 years ago. Its not often that one gets a chance to compare perception to the memory of the same place. You have to be away for 30 years and then you only get once chance to compare - the first time you see something after a long while. Like a very good old bottle of wine, you can imagine what it might taste like, but you get to try only once. So I am taking long walks when I am not teaching my workshop here at the Academy.
