Mud with Lonely This Christmas from 1974 .... Lonely This Christmas was recorded by the 1970s big selling group Mud. The track sold over 850,000 copies and reached the no:1 spot for Christmas in 1974. Written and produced by Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman Lonely This Christmas was Muds 2nd no: single in the UK spending four weeks at the top in December of 1974 thru to January in 1975. It was the third number one single that year for the Chinn & Chapman writing and production team and was performed in the style of Elvis due to Les Grays excellent take on Presleys voice. The song is noted for a performance on Top of the Pops in which guitarist Rob Davis was covered in tinsel and wore Christmas baubles as earrings while vocalist Les Gray sang to a ventriloquists dummy...... you remember last year when you and I were here we never thought there d be an end and I remember looking at you then and I remember thinking that Christmas must have been made for us cos darling, this is the time of year that you really need love when it means so very, very much so it ll be lonely this Christmas without you to hold It ll be lonely this Christmas lonely and cold It ll be lonely this Christmas without you to hold It ll be lonely this Christmas lonely and cold It ll be cold, so cold, without you to hold this Christmas. merry christmas darling wherever you are ......
