Mudpuppies - one of the most unique aquatic salamanders found in Indiana County is the Mudpuppy. They typically grow up to 12 inches in size but can reach lengths of 19 inches. Only Hellbenders are larger than Mudpuppies in our area. Mudpuppies spend their entire lives in the water living under rocks and leaf litter. They feed primarily on crayfish and small fish but will eat just about anything that can fit in their gaping mouths. They have external gills that are exposed just behind their head. Mudpuppies are active throughout the year and will begin their breeding season soon. They lay 20-200 eggs on the undersides of rocks. The females usually guard the nest until the eggs hatch. We are fortunate to have Mudpuppies here in Indiana County and in other parts of western PA. Pollution, siltation and agricultural runoff have reduced Mudpuppy populations in many areas. We had the chance to participate in a recent stream survey in Indiana County where these photos were taken.
