Mugabe Party Launches ‘Terror Election Campaign President Robert Mugabe’s ZANU-PF party is facing accusations that it has launched a “terror election campaign” with activists forcibly signing up supporters in an attempt to shore up the vote in upcoming elections. Officials with the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) — whose leader, Morgan Tsvangirai, will challenge Mr Mugabe for the presidency — told FFZE on Friday that ZANU-PF activists were systematically threatening villagers in Midlands province. President Robert Mugabe “Our supporters are now living in fear here in Mberengwa as these guys have started their terror election campaign,” said MDC-T Midlands provincial secretary Zenzo Hove. Zimbabwe’s general election is expected to be held in coming months. Timing is a point of contention as Mr Mugabe says he will abide by a Constitutional Court ruling that the poll be held by July 31, while his opponents push for a later date to allow reforms to be implemented. As campaigning picks up so are reports of intimidation of a wide range of people, including human rights activists and those involved in voter education programmes runby the non-government sector. Lydia Muvengwa, the MDC-T’s information secretary in Mberengwa South district, said her home was visited by ZANU-PF supporterswho ordered her to swear that she would vote for the President’s party, and sign to that affect. “They are moving around in groups in all villages in the district and on Wednesday they were at my homestead and asked me tosign into this book and also swear that I will vote Mugabe, but I refused,” said Ms Muvengwa, who lives in Magiriza village nearMusume Mission. “After that they threatened me, saying that they will make sure I flee the village. They promised to come back at night and burn my home but I immediately rushed to report the matter to police,” she said.
