Mulligans Update: When I first took office, my priorities were - TopicsExpress

Mulligans Update: When I first took office, my priorities were tax reduction, and a return to single family homes. These objectives are still my priorities. I am happy to announce that the council approved a 2% property tax reduction. I saw a modest reduction in the taxes I owe the city on my home, and you should see it on your report as well. Its just a start, but a step in the right direction. We are also moving to slow the growth of high density housing. The council is not as firm on this issue as I wished they were, but it seems they are getting the message as VMU was repealed and developers arent coming with as many proposals for high density that we saw a year ago. Early this year, our city Manager presented to me the opportunity to bring Hale Center Theatre to our city. I was intrigued and agreed to meet with Mark and Sally Dietlein, who run Hale. After making a list of pros and cons, I felt as though Hale could be an overall win for our city. I wanted to encourage a development that would bring restaurants along with the theatre, while maintaining the driving range and batting cages. I knew that change is always difficult but felt that it could boost our local economy as well as save us some money that we have been spending in order to subsidize our golf course. For me, the pros of bringing Hale to SJ outweighed the cons. During that time, Mulligans revealed it has many passionate supporters. As the old love song goes You dont know what youve got till its gone. The threat of losing the course brought people out to speak up in support of keeping mulligans a golf course. Ill admit, I wasnt expecting the passion for Mulligans. And so that brings us to the present day. Hale Theatre is going to Sandy, and we do not currently have a plan on the table in regard to Mulligans. I believe its better to wait until we see another opportunity like Hale Center Theatre. So for now, its better to keep Mulligans just way it is. I want to see South Jordan get better. I dont want to change our city just to change it. Mulligans is one of our city icons and it would need a clear majority of support to do something new at that site. I do have concerns for subsidizing golf. I do have a desire to increase our commercial tax base (which makes YOUR taxes lower). But I do not think now is the time to develop Mulligans, but that we should always keep an open mind for whatever possibilities come along. I waited a long time to marry and to find the right wife. I can wait for the right opportunity for South Jordan. Theres no rush. Thats my feeling on Mulligans, but the council is interested in learning what YOUR feelings are. Therefore, we will be conducting public surveys and focus groups to get a feel for what the public desires for Mulligans. Keep your ears and eyes open for these surveys in the coming months. Respectfully, Mayor Alvord
