Multi-stakeholder perceptions of efficiency in biodiversity conservation at limited access forests of the southern Western Ghats, India -- Arun Kanagavel, Revati Pandya, Rajeev Raghavan & Aditya Prithvi, Pp. 4529–4536 dx.doi.org/10.11609/JoTT.o3439.4529-36 Perceptions of stakeholders’ capability to address issues relevant to biodiversity conservation are often not discussed. Varying perceptions and mistrust towards a stakeholder group from others, which the specific group may be unaware of, could diminish their role in conservation. This study explores the efficiency of key stakeholders in biodiversity conservation: Forest Department, Local Communities and Conservation Researchers. Efficiency in biodiversity conservation was explained as the amount of positive assistance the stakeholders provided towards conserving biodiversity. Questionnaires surveys were undertaken at Kodaikanal, Theni and Valparai with 480 individuals from local communities, 21 Forest Department officials and 11 conservation researchers. The Forest Department was rated with the highest efficiency followed by local communities and conservation researchers. Researchers in Valparai were rated much higher than those in the other areas and also above local communities in Valparai. Biodiversity conservation in Theni and Kodaikanal would benefit from the setup of permanent field stations that would be actively involved in research and outreach. Greater interaction between the key stakeholders may improve perceptions towards one another and aid in collaborative biodiversity conservation.
