Multiculturalism Pt. 1 - The Issue Of Race It is sad that people reduce multiculturalism to race, and therefore frame(and dismiss) any criticism of it, as being race-based. Sure, cultural differences often accompanies race, because different races from different parts of the world often have their own unique culture. But in a melting pot like a lot of the Western World, race is very often not a barometer or signifier, of cultural difference. Many of my asian, hispanic, black, and white friends are techies and gamers who dont see these arbitrary distinctions of skin color and ethnic origins as a way to divide and classify themselves by, and rightly so. Because race-based multiculturalism very often doesnt exist in places where people are reasonably assimilated, into a non-racial-based culture. Like us, the gaming & programming community, who are made up of people of all racial and ethnic backgrounds. The same is true for the Christian community, or the Conservative Republican community. I frequent both very often, as a Polynesian Jew, and both are the most welcoming groups youll come across, and a lot of that has to do with the fact that their communities arent centered around race. And this has been a uniquely American development, that you wont find in many places outside of America, or the anglosphere. It has shown our ability to conquer tribalism, by de-elevating the valuing of blood, ethnicity, and skin color, in favor of diverse communities built around compassion, merit, and ethics, and a society filled with these many diverse but ethical communities, who share a common set of values, and a common culture beyond their immediate culture, with one other.
