Blanchard was born in New Orleans. In his teens Blanchard attended the New Orleans Center of Creative Arts, where he studied and played with saxophonist Donald Harrison. Harrison and Blanchard replaced Wynton and Branford Marsalis in Art Blakeys Jazz Messengers. Blanchard is well known as a performer and musical composer for films, including several by Spike Lee. For Lees film Mo Better Blues Blanchard was musical arranger and a trumpet coach for actor Denzel Washington.
