Mum Update: Mum had a full ball and socket replacement on her - TopicsExpress

Mum Update: Mum had a full ball and socket replacement on her right fractured hip late last night (Saturday). The Misericordia continues to be fantastic. The Charge Nurse and Mums Nurse called us throughout the evening keeping us appraised when Mum was taken down for surgery (we had just left the hospital to grab a quick bite when they called to say she was going down to Theatre) and letting us know when she came back up to her room. (Imagine there are only two in the room, in a two person room! And Mum has had no issues getting pillows nor IV poles -- sadly all these were impossibilities at the RAH.) Today Mum was in pain and was experiencing post-op delirium (which we were told can occur) and I am unsure if she even knew we were even there. Again the Nurses have been very informative and solicitous and we spoke to them this evening and Mum is resting more comfortably now. I will be at the Miz tomorrow and hope to catch the Orthopedist and/or Physiotherapists to find out as much as I can on what plans are and how we can help. Mum still has residual issues from last years stroke including short-term memory issues and weakness on her right side (same side as the fracture) and I need to be assured that those working with her know and understand this. I do not want unachievable expectations put on Mum but I also want to make sure that her rehabilitation ensures that she recovers to at the very least the state she was at, if not have improvements. One thing that came out after her initial set of x-rays was that Mum had a broken pelvis at some time. I will make sure that follow up x-rays reveal when this fracture happened as to the best of my knowledge and Mums she has never broken anything prior to her hip. I think this fracture may have happened while she was at the RAH after her stroke or at the beginning of her living at the Citadel because she was totally wheelchair bound then whereas now (before this accident) she has been in the wheelchair but has been able stand with assistance and has walked (again with assistance). No blame, Mum could have fallen like she did on Friday (thinking she could walk unassisted), her bones are fragile and a irregular move with not gentle enough assistance when she was being transferred to bed, chair or bath. I want to make sure it has healed correctly and the level of remodelling will give some idea when the fracture occurred. (Being a frequent faller I know a lot about fractures and remodelling and might as well put my speciality to use!) Thank you, everyone for your thoughts, much appreciated.
