Mum question: I have a nearly 3 day old baby girl who absolutely - TopicsExpress

Mum question: I have a nearly 3 day old baby girl who absolutely loves to feed and does it very wrll from the time she was born. I was very adament about having immediate skin to skin time with her as she was born and letting her find the boob on her own when she was ready which she did amazingly well.. since then she feeds an hour each time, half on each side every single feed and sometimes wants more than that. The midwives told me not to let her go for more than half an hour on each side but I dont really have a choice sometimes because she just doesnt settle and keeps trying to suck on anyone or anythi g else and cries for more. Ive had every midwife check the latching on and they all beleive she latches on perfectly and thr technique is corrected however I have very sore nipples. I have always had sensitive nipples that I was always a little concerned about how I would fo breastfeeding. In day 1 I got a little bit of bleeding on each side that the nurses said looked like grazing and a little blood blister as they called it on one side. Im persisting feeding since I really dont want to use formula but I keep getting told about it in order to give my nipples a rest. Feeding is sore for me, sharp biting like pain but I can take the pain. Im hoping that as my milk comes in and the flow is stronger my nipples will just get accustomed to a little someonw being on the end of them all time. Like I said I rather deal with the pain then go for formula but my main concern is that ill damage mynipples too much and wont have a choice. Could you make any recommendations? They are weighing her today and if shes lost too much I may not have a choice but to top up with formula, should I at least do that by syringe not bottle? Pinky says: You sound like such a strong mama. If you are really too sore and want to give your nipples a rest, you can hand express and give her this for one feed. Its normal for babies to lose some weight - especially if you had IV fluids - this plumps them up so that as they get rid of the extra fluid it looks as though they have lost significant weight (that was just extra fluid from the IV you had in labour). If you are going to topup, yes a syringe would be better. She can suck on your finger (nail side up towards the roof of her mouth) as you syringe. However, can you also get the midwives/ your Dr or ask for a lactation consultant to check inside her mouth - just in case the pain is being caused by a tongue or lip tie. Breastfeeding looks ok - so why does it hurt? A good article here nurturedchild.ca/index.php/2012/11/12/my-babys-latch-is-perfect-so-why-does-breastfeeding-hurt/
