Mumbai Pharmacist rents out his degree to chemist, both land in FDA net Priyanka Vora, Hindustan Times Mumbai, September 24, 2013. First Published: 08:36 IST(24/9/2013) | Last Updated: 08:43 IST(24/9/2013) A pharmacist who had ‘rented out’ his pharmacy degree to a chemist shop in Kandivli has been booked by the vigilance wing of the state Food and Drug Administration (FDA), along with the store owner and salesperson. The pharmacist, Surendra Gupta, works as an area manager with a private pharmaceutical company. Acting on a tip- off, FDA officers visited Shreya Medicals store and found that the pharmacist was not available. “When our FDA inspector questioned the attendants, a salesperson came ahead pretending to be the pharmacist. On further inquiry, we learnt that Gupta actually worked with a private company in Jogeshwari,” said Shailesh Kale, joint commissioner, vigilance, FDA. FDA officials have lodged an FIR against the store owner, Shweta Sharma, salesperson Indresh Mauryaa and Gupta at Kurar police station. In order to get a licence for a chemist shop, the owner has to submit an affidavit to employ a full-time pharmacist, while the a declaration that he or she will not work anywhere else. “The owner was running the store without a qualified pharmacist, which amounts to cheating gullible patients. Also, during our investigation, we found that medicines were being sold without prescriptions,” said Kale, adding that the licence of the chemist will be cancelled. “We have registered a case of cheating and causing hurt with an intent to commit an offence against all three of them,” said Subhash Dafle, senior police inspector, Kurar hindustantimes/India-news/Mumbai/Mumbai-Pharmacist-rents-out-his-degree-to-chemist-both-land-in-FDA-net/Article1-1126348.aspx
