Mumbai cops’ cloned cards used in greece In a massive card-cloning scam, `15 lakh was fraudulently withdrawn from the accounts of 37 persons, including 15 Maharashtra policemen. The policemen held salary accounts in Axis Bank and the withdrawals were shown to be made from Greece. The Axis bank ATM below the Maharashtra police headquarters at Colaba is suspected to have been the place where the cards must have been cloned as most of the complaints have come from there. The Mumbai police, including the crime branch, local police and cyber crime investigation cell, have initiated a massive investigation headed by DCP (Zone 3) Vinayak Deshmukh. “The complaints are being registered at Colaba police station as the DG office and the ATM is located in their jurisdiction. We have formed a team of four officers, including a separate team formed by the Colaba police. Cyber crime officers are also assisting,” Mr Deshmukh said. Senior PI R.S. Sapule said an FIR has been registered following a complaint by the bank. “We have learnt that there are around 14 to 15 policemen amongst the 37. We are in the process of identifying other victims,” he added. Mr Deshmukh clarified the scam did not specifically target the police. Axis Bank officials from their Lower Parel headquarters visited the N.M. Joshi police station and promised cooperation. Few tips to help you safe guard your account (Credit/Debit) while doing online transactions. a. Always type the website address on your bank on your PC or Mobile browser (Avoid clicking on Links). b. Always check for the “Padlock” Icon on your browser while carrying any online transactions. c. Avoid sharing any confidential information related to your bank accounts over phone / email /SMS. d. Do not fall prey to emails / SMS claiming you have won in some lottery or have been shortlisted for some funds lying (Beware : Offers are lucrative enough but do not fall prey). e. Ensure you have latest antivirus updated on your electronic gadgets. f. Never click on Pop-Up’s claiming your PC is infected and download the antivirus for free , Remember nothing comes free of cost or without you asking for it. g. Be cautious while making any secure transactions on Public Computers unless absolutely necessary. In case you still need to do please don’t forget to use the Virtual Keyboard provided by most of the banking sites. h. Take precautions while using your Debit / Credit cards at ATM and if you feel suspicious better avoid that particular ATM and do inform your BANK. i. Never allow your credit / debit card go out of sight while shopping / petrol pumps / retail shops. j. Immediately call your Bank / Local enforcement agencies whenever you find anything suspicious.
