Mumbai gets Indias first monorail service. The much-awaited Mumbai monorail service between suburban Wadala and Chembur was inaugurated by Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on February 1. Starting February 2, the service will initially be operational between 7 am and 3 pm, but by the time the final phase is completed, the monorail will run for around 19 hours a day. Initially, the time between two monorails will be around 15 minutes, but once the entire stretch of 20 km is operational the frequency will increase reducing the time between two monorails to 3 minutes. Six monorails will be operational in the first phase. The four-coach monorails can ferry around 500 passengers at a time and the tickets will be priced between Rs 5 and Rs 11 on the Wadala-Chembur route. Expected to reduce traffic congestion between Chembur and Wadala, the project is estimated to cost over Rs 3,000 crore and will take another two to three years to be fully functional. The air-conditioned monorails aim to cut travel time between from Chembur and Wadala to about 20 minutes. Yahoo news.
