Mummering, a centuries-old English Christmas tradition, is still practiced in Newfoundland. It typically involves a group of family or friends who visit the homes of neighbors during Christmas time. Dressed in disguise, the mummers challenge their hosts to guess their identities and often present skits or music to their hosts in expectation of a bit of food or a drop of screech – AKA Newfoundland moonshine. Mummering got a 20th century boost when The Mummers Song written by Bud Davidge was recorded by the Newfoundland folk duo Simani and later, in a much more upbeat arrangement, by Great Big Sea. It was also turned into a childrens book. Some of the illustrations from the book are included in this video. youtu.be/FzJW65XwKPY
