Muralist and painter Juana Alicia discussed the meaning of Cinco de Mayo in the U.S. In an oral history interview conducted in 2000, she noted: It’s not just about la Batalla de Puebla y los niños heroes. It’s about being Latinos in this country—Latinos, an indigenous people in this country—and our triumphs and our struggles. It’s not just about the Battle of Puebla. That’s what it’s about in Mexico. But here it’s much more about everything from the farm worker movement to the cultural arts movement to bilingual education and all of our struggles—as not just Chicano people but Puertoriqueños, about Vieques, about Nicaragua, about sovereignty, about all of that.
