Musafir Hoon Yaaron is a historical song simply because it brought R.D. Burman and Gulzar to work together for the first time. The friendship that followed is among the most legendary in Bollywood. Gulzar remembers the composition of this song thus: RD woke Gulzar up at 1 am asking him to come down to the car to listen to the tune. And then, RD drove through the streets all night and kept playing the song on his car stereo. It is said that the ending of the mukhda was the first part of the song composed and the rest of the song was created around it. That is unique in itself because most songs are composed from beginning to end and not from the middle. The movie, Parichay, that this song is from, is said to be inspired by the English movie Sound of Music.
