Museum Photo of the Week – Jan. 25, 2015 – A 10-passenger bobsled gets ready to start a run down North Third Street in Klamath Falls in this undated photo. Third Street was the most popular coasting spot in town in the early 1900s, though the notion of sleds and automobiles sharing the streets raised obvious concerns. In January 1915, authorities tried to prohibit sledding on Third Street. At one point, police arrested 18 young people for unlawful sledding, although they were released a few hours later when authorities were forced to admit the youngsters had not violated any specific ordinance. Hundreds of residents signed a petition asking the City Council to designate 7 to 11 p.m. each evening as coasting hours on Third Street. Despite objections from homeowners on the street, the Council granted the petition. A second photo shows a crowd gathered for the fun. Click on each image for more information.
