Mushroom of the Day 9/23/2104 - Leccinum scabrum Leccinum - TopicsExpress

Mushroom of the Day 9/23/2104 - Leccinum scabrum Leccinum scabrum is commonly known as the Birch Bolete, and is an easy to identify and delicious wild edible. This mushroom falls into the category of “Boletes”, which in the broad sense means a mushroom that grows with sponge-like tubes under the cap instead of blade-like gills seen in the traditional agaric mushrooms. It grows in in mycorrhizal association with birch trees, and can often be found in parks and landscaped areas with ornamental birch. Along with its tree association, this mushroom is easily identifiable by its brown cap, creamy to tan tubes, and creamy colored stem adorned with dark brown scabers/squamules (see photos). The tube surface will slowly bruise brown when handled, and the internal mushroom flesh can (but usually doesn’t) bruise blue, especially nearer the stem base. Often considered a choice edible, it does appear that this species and its relatives can cause gastro disturbances and allergic reactions in some people.
